Programs
Multicultural
Outreach (MOS)
SCAD works
diligently to reach various individuals across the spectrum with
specialized services. The services provided are: advocacy, conflict
resolution, information and referral, education and multicultural
interpreters.
MOS also
awards scholarships to Multicultural Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing
College bound students. This is an excellent opportunity for Multicultural
students who work hard, make good grades and show leadership skills.
MOS encourages all students to apply for this scholarship.
Pilot
Captioning Project
Provides
real time captioning for local news programs across the state.
Real time captioning ensures that the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing
citizens are kept up to date. This is especially important in
coastal areas, hit first by hurricanes and vulnerable to natural
disasters.
South
Carolina Interpreter Recruitment & Training (SCIRT) Project
Although
there is a shortage of sign language interpreters nationwide,
this shortage has reached critical levels in South Carolina. The
SCIRT Project attempts to reduce this shortage by:

students into attending an Interpreter Training Program

Recruiting
recent Interpreter Training Program graduates into relocating
to South Carolina

certified interpreters into relocating to South Carolina

South Carolina’s practicing interpreters

Providing
assessment opportunities for South Carolina practicing interpreters

general information regarding interpreters, interpreting,
and the rights and obligations in relation to Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing
individuals

Services
Advocacy
SCAD works with individuals
to help them better understand the law and their responsibilities
under it. Assistance with dispute resolution regarding the Americans
with Disabilities Act (ADA), discrimination in the work place,
job market, courtroom, and many other issues.
Education
SCAD serves
as a consultant to educators in South Carolina. Our agency has
been involved on many levels from working to improve Deaf and
Hard-of-Hearing education on a statewide level to representation
and support at IEP meetings on behalf of Deaf students.
Information
Resource
A leading resource
for information regarding deafness in the state, SCAD is contacted
for deafness-related information by a variety of individuals and
institutions. SCAD is able to respond quickly with speakers, statistics,
referrals and other needed information. The agency also has a
free lending library full of deaf related information.
Bookstore
Citizens
can purchase a wide variety of assistive equipment, Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing
related books and videotapes as well as making special orders
though our bookstore.
Peer
Support
SCAD offers
a variety of opportunities for members of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing
communities to gather, network and support each other.
Notary
Public
SCAD offers
Notary Public Services. The services provided are: administer
oaths; take depositions and affidavits; take protests for non-payment
of bonds, notes, drafts and bills of exchange; take acknowledgements
and proofs of deeds and other instruments required by law to be
acknowledged; perform all other acts provided by law.
